The Big Agnes AXL Air Sleeping Pads are the lightest mats in the range with a seriously comfortable 9.5cm depth. Amazing comfort, impressive weight and packsize, what's not to love about this?!
Big Agnes says:
Simply put, this is the most comfortable and lightest ultralight warm weather pad you can put in your pack. Designed with gram counters, thru hikers, and technical gear junkies in mind, the AXL Air combines a high tenacity, patent-pending nylon rip-stop shell with internal minimalist construction that maximizes every ounce's stability and comfort. With larger outer tubes this pad keeps you cradled on top, while the built-in advanced heat reflective technology helps to maintain an optimal temperature while you sleep. Save room and weight in your pack for other backcountry essentials, since you won't even know the AXL Air is in there.
Big Agnes have again updated their line of inflatable sleeping pads making further improvements over the last few years, and we think that with the 2020 AXL Air mats, they have further improved on what is a super lightweight and comfortable mat.
There are an impressive range of features and tech specs but the main thing this mat gives you is a depth of 9.5cm for a really comfortable sleep. As a side sleeper and someone who moves around a lot during the night the AXL offers an impressive amount of comfort. Although this non-insulated version offers little in the way of warmth, they are still great mats for the warmer months. These ultralight and compact mats pack down to around the size of a drinks can, so you'll hardly notice it in your pack.

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
