The DownMat XP 9 M from Exped is one of the warmest mats we stock and is ideal for your full winter adventures. Whether you're braving full winter conditions in the Cairngorms or you are a cold sleeper simply looking for maximum insulation to stay warm throught the night the DownMat is a standout option.
The Exped Downmats are seriously warm and as they are essentially airbeds they are very comofrtable as well with a good amount of depth to the mat. Simple and quick to inflate and with a really good pack size for this level of warmth they have been designed for backpackers looking for a top quality mat.
We are impressed by the quality of construction and sheer attention to detail given to Exped products. The highly successful Schnozzel Pumpbag is included with this mat so it can be inflated quickly and easily even in extremely cold conditions. There is a return valve that allows air back to fill the pump chamber (as the pump chamber is located in one of the baffles this is necessary to have a completely inflated mat).

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
