When comfort and warmth are a priority the Synmat 3-D is a great option. This is a really comfortable mat with durable, stretch fabric and a good helping of insulation for full, year-round use.
Luxurious edge-to-edge 3-D construction paired with cozy stretch top fabric that conforms to the body for a luxurious wilderness sleep experience. SynMat 3-D provides a great balance of warmth, comfort, and small packed size. Includes special-edition Schnozzel Pumpbag in light and durable 40D ripstop nylon for rapid, moisture-free inflation.
Exped's Synmat 3-D 7 M Sleeping Mat isn't the lightest mat in terms of weight but it certainly provides a great level of comfort. The combination of weight, warmth, comfort and pack size are balanced well and although you wouldn't necessarily take this on long multi-day treks it is a great option for winter adventures or anyone willing to sacrifice carrying some extra weight for more comfort.
The larger pack size is due to the 3D cunstruction of the mat that allows a greater area of the mat to be comfortable rather then the insulation and padding ending before the edges of the mat like many others. With a good amount of synthetic insulation inside this mat is more than capable of standing up to winter conditions. With a temperature rating (ASTM R-Value) of -17°C combined with seriously durable fabrics on the top and bottom of the mat this is a solid piece of kit.
We are always impressed by the quality of construction and sheer attention to detail given to Exped products. The highly successful Schnozzel Pumpbag is included with this mat so it can be inflated quickly and easily even in extremely cold conditions. There is a return valve that allows air back to fill the pump chamber (as the pump chamber is located in one of the baffles this is necessary to have a completely inflated mat).

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
