Montane's Summit Tour 50+15 pack is designed for trek and travel, with an integrated 'Summit' 15 Litre pack, side access zips and a myriad of pockets and storage options.

Montane says: Self supported mountain trekking and world travel.

This mountain trekking pack is fully featured but retains the lightweight ethos of the Grand Tour pack family. It has been created for long multi day mountain walks, whether between huts or fully unsupported. It's unique removable, lightweight 15 litre day pack provides carry capacity for summit attempts or day hikes.

Also featuring side entry and large side bellow pockets, this pack allows for efficient kit organisation whilst trekking and enables prompt and easy access to essential items, making it ideal for world travel. Utilising the same back system as the Grand Tour 55 and Grand Tour 70 it has fantastic load carrying comfort and ability. The Summit Tour 50+15 is a lightweight, fully featured and comfortable mountain trekking pack.

Montane's Summit Tour 50 pack is pretty heavy for a 50 Litre rucksack - you're carrying around 2kg before you start. This isn't the type of pack we'd feature on our partner BasecampGear website. However there are some redeeming qualities that make it suitable for certain kinds of trip.

One key feature is the 15 Litre summit sack that packs neatly away into the main pack lid. This is particularly useful if you need a large pack to get your gear to a base and a much smaller pack for excursions to and from. Of course you can take two standard packs, there's particular reason why your main pack and daypack can't be different types from different manufacturers - however with the Summit Tour 50 the summit pack fits as neatly away as any pack that we've seen. You can still use two pockets in the lid even when the summit pack is stowed. The Summit pack weighs 290grams.

This pack also has a hefty built in rain cover which also adds weight and that you could leave at home if you wanted to save a bit - it also doubles as a pack shroud for travelling. This weighs 186grams.

If you stripped out the summit pack and the rain cover the weight of the 50 Litre pack comes down to about 1500grams, which is still on the heavy side, this comes from the features built into it which include side access zip, bellowed side pockets and various organiser pockets both inside and out. The additional weight also comes from the fabric, which is very tough and quite heavy.

In summary this pack has a massive feature set with just about everything you could imagine in a rucksack - it has a good harness system with a stiff backpanel that shifts the load effectively to the hips - there's a weight penalty for all this functionality so we think its a good pack for trips involving short sections of trekking with lots of basecamp time doing other things.
