Montane's Featherlite Packs are superb for adventure racing or fast backpacking trips over a couple of days - they are robust, have a comfortable harness system with a decent hipbelt and a string of useful features adding real value.
Montane says: Super lightweight and tough, multi-activity day pack.
With pure lightweight at its core, the Featherlite 30 backpack oozes minimalism without compromising on all day comfort or functionality. This super lightweight 685g overnight or full mountain day pack features the Montane ‘Comfort Air Back System’ a well-padded, fast drying, supportive back system that can be stripped down further to save weight. It can pack into its own lid for use as a secondary / summit pack. Engineered to include every feature needed but with a lightweight focus, the Featherlite™ 30 is ideal for the technical user who moves fast and light.
Montane's Featherlite Packs would make ideal adventure racing packs or backpacking rucksacks for those carrying a truly ultralight load on a 2 or 3 nighter, they differ from Montane's Ultra Tour packs in that they have more padding in the hip belt and shoulder straps making them even more suited to actual backpacking than racing.
Having said that there are not many people who will be able to get all the gear they need into 23 litres, which is where the 30 litre model comes in - but even that is very tight.
Even though there's been a lot of effort put into keeping the pack light the features haven't been skimped on, there's an internal bladder sleeve and two organiser pockets, one on the lid and one inside. The inside pocket doubles as a stuff bag if you remove the foam back panel - this makes the pack ideal as a summit or day pack if you are on a long and varied trip. Removing the back panel saves a further 114grams but it does leave the pack in a floppy state, if used in this manner careful packing is required.
A pair of stretch mesh pockets on the hipbelt and open pockets on the sides of the pack add real value its a great pack, the only thing I'd add would be a larger mesh pocket on the outside - but that's being picky, especially as other Montane packs have that feature.
