OMM have achieved awesome low weight while still retaining a full three layer fabric construction. The Aether jacket also has notable cuff and hem innovations and a decent wire in the hood.
OMM says: The NEW Ava & Aether jackets are lightweight fully featured mountain running jackets. We’ve focused on creating new innovative closures around the wrist, waist and face. We then combined these with eVent’s new DVSTORM 3 layer fabric. To achieve 200g without sacrificing performance every element of the Ava has been looked at from YKK Aquaguard zips to a POINTZERO pocket lining providing a 30% reduction on standard mesh. The Ava & Aether jackets are ideally suited for extreme weather and conditions found on the OMM event.
This is the male version of the award winning Ava Jacket. The OutDoor INDUSTRY Award is one of the leading international design awards for companies in the outdoor industry. New and innovative products are assessed and evaluated by an independent panel of expert judges.
The AVA jacket was judged to be "outstanding for its degree of innovation, functionality, weight and size when packed"
OMM: “We focus heavily on innovation and development to provide our users with the most advanced products possible. We are very pleased to have our efforts rewarded with such a prestigious award.”
OMM's 2016 Aether Jacket achieves greatness by being ultra-lightweight yet retaining a full 3 layer construction, a decent hood and some nice hem and cuff detailing. 3 layer garments have the durability edge over their 2.5 layer counterparts but this usually adds weight - using a new incarnation of 3 layer eVent fabric OMM have managed to secure better durability without sacrificing weight.
The cuff innovation is great, allowing you to set the cuff as a thumb loop arrangement, this not only helps protect cold hand but also stops the sleeves riding up and prevents undergarment sleeves getting wet.
The hem adjustment pulls in the rear without cinching the front of the garment, essentially providing the adjustment needed without restricting the wearer.
Other attention to detail is impressive, we like the wired hood - so often its simply a foam brim with garments this light, but the Aether sports a real 'bendy' bit of wire. Special mesh inside the pockets is 30% lighter than typical mesh linings.
This jacket is designed and is ideal for mountain marathons and competitions but would also be at home on a fell runner or ultralight fast packer. No wonder it won an Outdoor Industry award.
