The Kaon is a clever combination of down and synthetic fill and it all comes together to create a jacket that is the perfect balance between the luxurious warmth of down and the durability of synthetic insulation. This is a minimalist jacket first and foremost, and is an excellent choice for lightweight missions in changeable conditions.
Designed for alpinists looking to do more but take less, the Kaon Jacket combines intelligent zoning and breathable inserts to offer warmth and protection without the weight penalty.
Conceived as the next step in insulated layers, the Kaon Jacket employs a combination of high-loft hydrophobic down, quick-drying synthetic fill and insulation-free underarm sections for the ideal balance of warmth, protection and movement. Its intelligent zoning of materials uses 800 fill power European goose down in the body, quick-drying Stratus™ insulation in the cuffs, shoulders and hips and Pertex Quantum Air panels under the arms, ensuring that warmth and flexibility are matched by outstanding breathability when your climb gets intense. Built using Atmos™ lightweight ripstop nylon, the Kaon Jacket uses a half-hem drawcord and elasticated cuffs for a close fit, alongside a YKK front zip and features a chest pocket for storing essentials.
With stitch-through construction and a handy stuff sack for easy packability, you can enjoy the core warmth, active dryness and multi-application versatility of the slim-fit Kaon Jacket, wherever your path leads.
Rab's Kaon Down Jacket is ideal for lightweight trips in warmer weather, and the combination of down and synthetic fills makes this an extremely versatile piece. The Kaon is primarily filled with 800 fill hydrophobic down, while Stratus synthetic insulation is used over the shoulders, cuffs, hips and hood for added durability in high-wear areas. This is an effective combination, and maintains excellent levels of warmth while resulting in a jacket that can take far more abuse than your average insulated piece. The underarm is constructed from uninsulated, stretchy Pertex Quantum fabric, in a weight saving measure that also didn’t cause any noticeable loss in warmth.
The Kaon has proven to be the ideal piece for evenings around the campsite, providing plenty of warmth when the sun drops below the horizon. The small pack size and low weight has guaranteed it a place in my pack, and the versatility of the insulation combination brings a peace of mind when wearing it that is entirely unique. It’s proven itself as an active layer, perfect for fast mountain trips when the temperatures are low. The breathability, increased by the underarm panels, is a key feature and is ideal for getting moving before the sun gets up. The jacket lacks handwarmer pockets, which is probably a weight-saving measure, but the addition of pockets would have been great in my opinion especially to keep hands warm during breaks. The Kaon is a staple for active, three season trips into the mountains and provides exceptional breathability and warmth for the weight.
