The Battle Mountain is a solid, freestanding tent that gives you a load of space. The design and construction of this tent are meant to withstand pretty serious conditions and it certainly stands up to the worst I've encountered so far. Tough, stable and durable this is an all season winner.
Big Agnes says: Three+ season, free standing, mountaineering shelters.
Battle Mountain tents are spacious four season, lightweight mountaineering tents that offer full protection in the harshest of backcountry conditions. With durable rip stop fly material, nylon rip-stop body and closeable mesh vents, lightweight Mega X stakes, these double door/double vestibule storm shelters are built to withstand brutal alpine conditions.
Big Agnes's Battle Mountain 2 Tent is a serious tent for winter conditions. It isn't the lightest but the weight is sacrificed for strength and durability. With a solid pole set-up and larger 'Mega X' pegs this tent is designed to withstand strong winds and more. The two entrances and vestibules give you access options depending on the weather and additional storage space for winter gear. Much tougher fabrics than you'd usually see on Big Agnes tents round out the weather resistant nature of this tent.
The pole setup needs practice as it is quite complicated, especially in poor weather when speed is important. The weight and the bulk/pack size of this tent is the main issue but if you are after a four season tent that will give you protection from the worst of the elements than the Battle Mountain is worth considering. The space you get combined with the stability have won me over and although I wouldn't need such a tent when going solo it is great when shared in colder, harsher conditions.
