Big Agnes's Blacktail tents are a step away from the ultralight, ultra-expensive fabrics found in their lightest tents and offer large sized inners with a practical mix of mesh and fabric to deal with a range of conditions - a bit heavier than other tents in their range but they should have a longer life and offer great value for money.
Big Agnes says:
Three season, free standing, backpacking tents.
The Blacktail two, three, and four-person tents offer spacious sleeping areas for a pair or family of campers. Easy access through two, side-entry doors and vestibules makes climbing over your tent mate for an early morning bathroom run a thing of the past. An excellent value for the entry-level backpacker or those who just want a super comfortable tent to bring on the trail.
Big Agnes's Blacktail 2 Tent is a spacious 2 person backpacking tent with two entrances and two porches - one of the most convenient designs available. While its not among the lightest in this design it has good head height and internal space, note the footprint of the inner tent is a true rectangle compared to the tapered design of other tents in the Big Agnes range.
The inner tent is a good mix of fabric and mesh so that there's protection from wind and rain, and you get some privacy in the lower sections of the tent, yet it also has good ventilation making the tent suitable for a range of conditions.
With two entrances, two porches and plenty of internal storage the Blacktail series are well thought out tents that come in at a decent price - which includes a footprint, Big Agnes has achieved this by taking one step back from the ultra-light, ultra-expensive fabrics used in other designs.
