The Ortlieb Back-Roller Pro Plus 78L Panniers are a great choice for commuting and touring when you need to carry a load of kit. They are well designed, very well built and highly durable. As usual, the high quality waterproof materials used are effective and perform well in any conditions you might encounter.

The Back-Roller Pro Plus is the XL version of the popular Back-Roller Plus touring bag. With a volume of 78 liters per pair, it offers almost twice as much stowage space. It’s also the first ORTLIEB Back-Roller with an additional front pocket. Although not waterproof, the pocket is unusually practical, offering 4 liters of space for water bottles, sunscreen, wet things, and other items. The durable Codura fabric gives the bag a noble, woven-fabric look, and is also completely PVCfree. The proven roll closure keep the contents of the inner compartment clean and dry at all times. Thanks to the ingenious QL2.1 system with its self-closing hooks, you can conveniently mount your bags on almost any bike rack.
Our Verdict
Ortlieb's Back-Roller Pro Plus 78L has the new Cordura fabric which updates the traditional Ortlieb style with a more stylish look and feel to the panniers. These provide a huge amount of space for packing and transporting kit. With the roll top lid it does mean that you can adjust the size depending on how much you have in them. With this size you need to take care with your distribution (keeping it even) so you can keep you balance on the journey. The mounts are easy to use, really solid and fully adjustable.
The roll top lid makes access quick and easy. They come with a number of internal pockets, one large zipped pocket and a couple of smaller mesh pockets to keep things organised. There are also a large outer pocket on each pannier which is perfect for sticking wet gear in as there is a mesh panel around it to let moisture out. These have been really practical packs for commuting and the quality of the Ortlieb construction means that you never worry about the contents being exposed to poor weather.
