The Lost Ranger UL 3N1 0° sleeping bag is part of our latest evolution of the Big Agnes Sleep System. This modular ultralight bag design offers just what you'd expect: three bag configurations in one simple, yet technical sleep system that stays attached to your pad, so you won't roll off in the middle of the night. It's the only bag that you need for 3 season camping, backpacking and everywhere in between. These ultra-lightweight, down-fill bags deliver comfort and versatility no matter your sleep style or temperature preference.
Our Verdict
The Big Agnes Lost Ranger 3N1 offers a unique concept that makes this bag useful for many different situations and eliminates the need for having to own multiple sleeping bags for different times of year and different environments.
The concept of this bag is so simple yet something that I'm surprised that has not been though of before, which is to offer a solution to the problem of finding a bag that is suitable for every kind of sleeper in a range of different temperatures.
If you are a side sleeper then there is the common issue of getting cold spots because you expose the back of the bag when on your side. The quilt option allows you to keep the heat in while on your side, by using the mat attachment to get a good seal that prevents any insulation loss. The cover that goes over the top of the mat provides a comfortable layer between you and the mat so there is no discomfort from your skin pressing against the mat as can often be the case with quilts.
The Pad Cinch System is one of the best we have found in terms of ease of use, the seal you get around the mat and the fact that it is compatible with a wide range of mats (between 20"x66"-30"x78") as it is very adjustable.
If you are a warmer sleeper then you can use the quilt on its own as it can be adjusted at the sides to allow more air to get in and there is also more room to move about if you're a bit restless. If you a generally a colder sleep then you have the option of using the super lightweight down bag which has a good rating of -7°C for its weight and the 3/4 zip down the front means that if you roll on your side then you're not getting any discomfort from leaning on a side zip.
Finally, the quilt and bag can be combined to increase the rating to -18°C making it suitable for 3 season temperatures and also for anyone who is a particularly cold sleeper. Having the bag inside of the quilt also comes in handy if you are restless as you won't roll off the mat during the night. At a total weight of 1.2kg for the total bag it is pretty competitive to the weights of other bags with a similar temperature range.
Although Big Agnes have come up with a unique concept of the 3N1 this is something that could be the norm over the next few years because it seems to be a solution to a lot of sleeping bag issues.
