The look of this jacket won't be to everyone's taste as your first impression might be that it looks pretty thick, shinny and oh so white, but what Columbia have achieved with their OutDry Extreme Eco technology, is a jacket constructed without any PFCs and made from 100% recycled materials, trims and all. That's 21 plastic bottles per jacket!
Conventional rainwear uses a fabric on the outside that is laminated to a thin waterproof membrane. The outer fabric requires a PFC-based Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment to cause water and dirt to bead up on its surface. However, PFCs are bio-accumulative in wildlife and humans and persist in the environment. This is why Columbia introduced OutDry Extreme technology without any additional outer fabric, eliminating the need for PFC-based DWR without compromising performance.
Yes it's white which might not be every outdoors-mans dream colour, but it's kept white for a reason. Dye-free fabric saves over 13 gallons / 51 liters of water compared to standard, dyed jacket.
A truly ECO friendly jacket!
