RAB's Firewall pants use a 3 Layer stretch version of Pertex Shied+ which offers excellent breathability and waterproof performance with 3/4 length zips.
New for Spring/Summer ’16, the Firewall Pants are stretch waterproof pants using Pertex Shield + 3-layer fabric, ideal for use in alpine or winter conditions where freedom of movement is essential.
3/4 length fully waterproof YKK AquaGuard 3-way side zips allow for high levels of breathability lending the Firewall Pants to active use in mixed environments. Comfort is guaranteed with the addition of a part elasticated gripped waistband and knee articulations to assist with technical climbing.
The Firewall Pants are compatible with winter boots with the addition of under-boot cord attachment loops and a regular fit allows for a baselayer to be comfortably worn underneath.
Rab's Firewall Pants are very technical although you might expect a full length zip on truly winter overtrousers. The fact that the material has stretch ability is important if you're going to be travelling over rough terrain. The fabric is good - Pertex Shield+ is noted for its breathability and a 20,000 hydrostatic head is sufficient for all conditions.
The part elasticated waistband helps stop them riding down your back and the shockcord makes sure they don't move. The side zips are the water resistant type but are also backed by an internal flap for comprehensive protection. You can cinch the ankle hem tight and the fabric is soft enough to reduce the noise as you trek along.
The underboot cord attachments are small but perfectly formed and you have to add your own loops. The Firewall pants are a good option if you want stretch, high breathability and 3 layer durability without a significant weight penalty.
