Outdoor Research's Helium II is an ultra-lightweight waterproof and breathable jacket designed to give a high level of protection at a miniscule weight.
Outdoor Research says: Built for flash-storm protection, the 100% waterproof, super-breathable Helium II Jacket weighs an incredibly light 5.5 ounces. An ultra-compressible piece you'll never leave behind, it's so light and packs down so small, you'll forget it's clipped to your harness until you throw it on to ward off a sudden mid-route downpour.
Compressible to the size of a granola bar, the Helium II keeps you completely protected from unfriendly weather on the trail but doesn't waste space or add more than a feather's-worth of weight to your pack.
Outdoor Research's Helium II jacket uses Pertex Shield+ which is an exceptional performing fabric offering full waterproof protection with a high level of breathability. Feature wise the jacket has a simple hood with a 'round the head' cinch cord which means you can pull it into your head and it will move as you do. There's a foam stiffened hood.
No hand pockets keep this garment light but there is a small external chest pocket. The wrist closures are half elasticated for a loose but close fit, and the hem can be cinched in. Internally there's a square pocket with velcro flap set just above the hem at the left hand size.
Although Pertex Shield+ is a very good fabric its necessarily thin to get down to these kind of weights - its therefore highly appropriate for light loads but if it was worn under a heavy rucksack for days on end we think the performance would be seriously compromised, there are heavier shells more appropriate to that kind of use.
