A footprint might seem like unnecessary extra weight, but with the right tent, it’s an investment in protection, flexibility, and peace of mind.
Big Agnes says:
To extend the life of your tent floor, we recommend using a Big Agnes footprint or ground cloth. The Big Agnes footprint also enables you to pitch a lightweight, Fast Fly shelter while leaving the tent body behind. The Fast Fly configuration requires the footprint, tent fly, poles, and stakes.
Our Verdict
Most manufacturers recommend using a footprint to extend the life of your tent’s groundsheet. But if you’ve just invested in an ultralight tent, do you really want to carry more weight?
It depends on where you’re camping. If you expect rough or rocky ground, a footprint is well worth it, especially for lightweight tents. Beyond protection, many footprints add versatility. Some let you pitch just the flysheet and footprint together for an ultralight shelter setup. A footprint also keeps your tent floor cleaner when you’re setting up on wet or muddy ground, saving you time and effort later.
And when it comes to ultralight performance, Big Agnes gets it right: their footprints are designed to match their tents in terms of minimal weight and maximum efficiency.
