Our Verdict
Black Diamond’s redesigned Distance Carbon Z Trekking Poles strike a careful balance between familiarity and refinement; the update hasn’t changed the fundamentals of this ultralight favourite, but the redesigned locking mechanism and more sustainable strap materials are welcome touches. At 139g per pole (115cm), they’re still among the lightest carbon options around, and the slimmed-down shafts feel nimble without compromising stiffness. Deployment is quick and instinctive with the push-button system, and the revised design is easier to manage with gloves.
The foam grips are light yet comfortable, and the breathable, recycled straps sit well during longer efforts. I particularly like the compact fold-down length, which makes them easy to tuck into a side pocket or running vest. The fixed length won’t work for everyone, especially if you rely on poles for shelter setup or like to adjust the height of the poles to match the terrain. However, for pure hiking or mountain miles, they hold up well on mixed terrain.
