Our Verdict
The latest Montbell Peak Shell Jacket updates a proven design with a 3-layer GORE-TEX construction and much-needed pit zips, providing improved weatherproofing and genuine ventilation to a shell that remains impressively light at 189g (Medium). The fit remains trim yet layer-friendly, thanks to a well-articulated cut and Montbell’s K-Mono pattern, which minimises seams without restricting movement. I wear a Large, and the fit was spot on, something that hasn’t always been guaranteed with Montbell.
The tri-axial hood is highly adjustable and tracks well with head movement, and the Alpine Cuffs do a good job of sealing out wind and wet. The chest pocket is well-placed for a harness, but the lack of hand pockets remains a noticeable omission in cooler climates.
Breathability has improved considerably with the new venting, and the jacket now holds up better during sustained effort in mixed weather. For fast-moving hikers and alpinists seeking a minimalist hardshell that performs effectively without weighing them down, this is an excellent choice.
