Footprints provide benefits when camping on rugged terrain, particularly for lightweight tents. They can also increase versatility by allowing ultralight shelters to be set up with just the flysheet and footprint.
Snow Peak:
Water resistant ground sheet for the Lago 1 Ivory tent. The sheet allows for protection from the cold and wet surfaces in which you may be setting up your tent on.
Our Verdict
Most tent manufacturers advise using a footprint to ensure the longevity of your tent's groundsheet. However, if you have just bought an ultralight tent, you may not want to carry the extra weight of a footprint.
Our recommendation is to use a footprint if you intend to camp on rugged terrain. This is particularly true for lightweight tents. Some footprints have additional purposes. For instance, you can set up an ultralight shelter using just the flysheet and footprint. This way, the footprint increases your shelter's versatility. Additionally, a footprint helps keep the tent floor clean when the ground is wet or muddy.
