Our Verdict
The Montane Malli Long Sleeve Zip T-Shirt builds on the familiar Dart base layer design, upgrading it with core-spun Merino fabric. Fine 18.5 micron wool is spun around a nylon core, with elastane blended in, producing a fabric that feels soft next to skin, manages odour well, and stretches easily while holding its shape longer than pure Merino.
At 183g (Medium), it remains lightweight yet robust. The trim cut is designed for close-fitting use in a layering system, and unlike the Dart, which I usually size up in, the Malli has enough give to be worn true to size. Flat merrow seams and stretch hems create a smooth finish under other layers, while raglan sleeves maintain mobility. The addition of a quarter-length zip increases ventilation options, making it practical for regulating heat during long climbs or fast-paced movement.
Moisture handling is excellent: sweat wicks efficiently, and the fabric dries more quickly than expected for Merino. After extended use and repeated washing, the garment retains its shape without noticeable wear or bobbling. For mountain use, where adaptable layering, comfort, and durability are essential, the Malli Zip version is an impressively versatile choice.
