The Sea to Summit Comfort Plus Insulated Mat is designed with two layers of high resolution cells that can be pressurised independently, allowing fine-tuning for comfort and redundancy for punctures.

Sea to Summit says:

Our Comfort Plus Insulated sleeping mats with their dual layer construction provide the most effective system for fine-tuning the level of comfort available in any air mattress today. The two independent high-resolution cell layers give excellent support by distributing your body weight and shape over more cells. The two layers are also offset for more uniform insulation and cushioning. Because the two layers can be pressurized independently, the top layer can be inflated to your personal comfort, while maintaining a high-pressure base layer for protection from rough or uneven terrain. Both layers can be adjusted independently using the fine tune valve to get just the right level of softness and support. We use Exkin® Platinum, a quiet non-woven fabric, to reflect radiant heat loss back to the user and Thermolite® insulation to prevent convective heat loss between your body and the ground.

Dual layer technology with Exkin Platinum® & Thermolite insulation. Two layer of high resolution cells that can be pressurised independently: inflate the top layer to your personal comfort while maintaining a high-pressure base layer for protection from rough terrain. Independent chambers allow the mattress to function even if one of the layers is punctured.

Our Verdict

Sea to Summit's Comfort Plus Insulated Sleeping Mat uses air sprung cells that form the core technology of this mat, allowing you to have a comfortable nights sleep. Instead of the typical baffled construction, these sleeping mats are constructed using a matrix of air cells that move independently to conform to your body’s shape without affecting adjacent cells. Translated to backpacker-speak, that means you don’t flatten out spots.

The mat’s firmness can be more finely tuned with Dual Layer construction – the bottom layer is inflated firm for height, then the top layers inflated to the desired comfort level. What's great about the dual layer, is that if you do end up with a puncture in one layer of the mattress, the other layer remains fully functional. That's always good to know as accidents can happen.

The comfort plus insulated mat may be heavier than the rest of the Sea to Summit mat range and have a slightly larger pack size, but as it's warmer that's to be expected.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
