Our Verdict
The R1 Air Crew offers excellent thermal control for high-output use in cool conditions. At 234g (UK 12), it’s light, trim and easy to layer, with good stretch through the arms and shoulders. The R1 Air fabric uses a zigzag-knit pattern with hollow-core polyester yarns, which enhances airflow and moisture transfer while keeping weight low. Unlike traditional grid fleece, it feels lofted yet airier, drying faster and breathing better during sustained effort. The cut is close-fitting but flexible, though some may prefer to size up for added room across the chest. Off-shoulder seams stay comfortable under pack straps. While soft and comfortable, the fabric is less resistant to abrasion and can pill with heavy use against rough surfaces. Best suited for fast-moving hikes or climbs in dry, cool conditions where breathability matters more than insulation or weatherproofing. A strong option for minimalist layering systems focused on movement and moisture control.
