Our Verdict
This is an incredibly robust pack built with the harsh alpine conditions in mind, is not the type of pack id take on a day hike or even a multi-day hike, but if I was off to do some serious mountaineering, this is the kind of bag I would be looking at.
Gregory has a reputation for well-fitting bags that comfortably spread the pack's weight evenly across the upper body and down onto the hips; this bag is no different. The Alpinisto uses an aluminium frame (which is removable) to help stabilise and spread the weight, a lightweight but strong solution. The Alpinisto sits higher than a traditional bag, it still transfers its weight to the hips, but it has made room for a climbing harness to be used without it getting in the way; the entire hip belt can be removed if you wish to lighten the load.
The back panels’ unusual appearance is because it has been specifically designed to help shed snow and retain heat. Another unusual feature is an internal “bivy pad”, a removable foam mat that can be used as a sit pad or, in a real pinch, a sleeping pad, as well as the full-length side zip that quickly gives you access to your entire pack. The front of the pack has a large oversized crampon pocket which is very durable, as it needs to be.
I have been saying for a long time that an “ice axe loop” isn’t really any good for safely transporting an ice axe, and finally, a bag company has given it some consideration; below the crampon pocket is a universal tool attachment system that safely transports any ice axe, I can't believe it took someone this long.
